About Dr Marike Ransome

Dr Marike Ransome

Journey to The Cedars, Rondebosch

Dr Marike Ransome grew up in Emmarentia, Johannesburg and matriculated from St Stithians Girls College in 1999. After taking a gap year in Stellenbosch, Dr Ransome started her medical studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 2001 and graduated with an MBBCh in 2006.

In 2007, she moved down to Cape Town with her fiance, Trevor Ransome, for her 2-year internship at Groote Schuur Hospital. Following her internship, she completed 1 year community service at Woodstock Day Hospital and Western Cape rehabilitation unit at Lentegeur.

After communitiy service Dr Ransome worked at various private GP practices around Cape Town. Through this work she gained valuable experience, developed her passion for family medicine and began a dream of starting her own medical practice. In July 2010 she turned her dream into a reality and started her own practice in Pinelands at Pine Care Centre. In April 2013 Dr Ransome moved to The Cedars in Rondebosch.

In January 2017 Dr Gisela Wagenaar joined Dr Ransome in practice at The Cedars. Together they share a passion in building a family GP practice with a difference, lead by a love for people and drive to enjoy ones daily work committments.

Upskill

Dr Marike Ransome assists top surgeons at Vincent Pallotti and Kingsbury Hospitals on a regular basis. These include orthopaedic, obstetric, neuro and general surgeons. She also frequently attends medical conferences and refresher courses hosted by the Universities and pharmaceutical companies in the Western Cape.

Outside of work

Dr Ransome loves spending quality time with her husband Trevor, her two boys Oliver and Adam, family, friends and her little dog Bella. She enjoys watching sport, playing sport and venturing into the outdoors on the odd hike in the mountains or a trip to the beach. She plays in an indoor netball league, enjoys a bit of tennis, does a bit of cycling but her sporting passion is golf. She is currently a member at Rondebosch Golf Club in Cape Town and plays in their A league off a single figure handicap.

Dr Ransome is contracted in with Discovery Medical Aid only and unfortunately no other medical aids. The reason for this is that it is an absolute nightmare working with all medical aids and it just makes sense for patients to individually submit the consultation receipt to their medical aid for re-embursment directly into their own bank accounts.

Dr Ransome’s reception pre-authorises a Discovery patient’s consultation. If all is in order the practice will submit the account directly to Discovery. If not, the patient then settles the bill and queries the status with Discovery personally.

The Cedars is a multidisciplinary health centre offering the services of not only Dr Ransome but a dentist, oral hygienist, dietician and psychologist, all under one roof... making your health our focussed priority.

About Dr Gisela Wagenaar

Dr GW

Journey to The Cedars, Rondebosch

Dr Gisela Wagenaar grew up in Greenside, Johannesburg and graduated from WITS Medical School in 2007. She met her husband, Riegardt, at University. After graduating and completing her internship at the Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa Hospitals in Johannesburg, the couple set out on an adventure to see what the Mother City had to offer.

She spent 2010 doing her community service at Victoria Hospital in Wynberg, working in General Medicine, Casualty and ICU. Thereafter two years working as first assistant to Dr Barry Barnard in Cardiac Theatre at Vergelegen Hospital in Somerset West where she especially enjoyed being part of bypass surgeries.

After doing some time in theatre, she longed for patient interaction and her long-life dream of having her own practice. She realised after having children, that working closer to home will mean more time with her family. She started a practice in Bergvliet with a colleague and worked there for some time. She then did more locum work closer to home and also did some online work for the Hello Doctor Company.

In 2016 she opened her own rooms in Rondebosch, at Victoria House. In early 2017, Dr Ransome, a close colleague and loyal friend was about to go off on maternity leave with the arrival of her second son, and the two decided to join forces at The Cedars, the most caring, patient centred practice in the Southern Suburbs.

When she is not caring for her patients, Dr Wagenaar is busy adoring her children, Karl, 6, Leia, 2, and her husband, Riegardt. She has two loyal fury children, Toby the Weimaraner, and Lucy, the Daschund. She loves cycling, hiking, scuba diving, birdwatching, creative projects and a good shiraz while spending time with special friends.
